If you are applying for a Canadian work permit, you may be required to complete an Immigration Medical Exam (IME) before Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) can approve your application. Who Needs a Medical Exam for a Work Permit?

Not every work permit applicant needs an IME. IRCC generally requires a medical exam for work permit applicants who:

• Plan to work in an occupation in which public health must be protected, such as healthcare settings, clinical laboratories, primary or secondary school settings, child-care settings, or positions involving in-home care for children, the elderly, or the disabled.
• Will be in Canada for more than six months.
• Have lived in or travelled to one or more designated countries or territories for six months or more in a row in the year before coming to Canada.
• Are applying through specific streams, such as the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program, where a medical exam is flagged as a requirement.

What Happens During the Exam?
