FAQ
Read our most Frequently Asked Questions about Immigration Medical Exam, Costs and Services.
Do I need a medical exam for permanent residence?
Yes. An immigration medical exam with a panel physician is a requirement for permanent residence, and your family members usually need one too, even if they are not coming with you.
When should I book my PR medical exam?
- Express Entry: After you receive your Invitation to Apply, book an upfront medical exam so it is ready when you submit your PR application.
- Other PR programs: Wait until IRCC sends you medical instructions, then book your exam within the timeframe they provide, usually 30 days.
Can my family doctor do my permanent residence medical exam?
No. Only IRCC approved panel physicians can perform immigration medical exams. IMMEDEX doctors are listed as panel physicians and follow IRCC standards.
If you want to understand the full process step by step, you can read our
IRCC immigration medical exam process guide and our
Canada immigration medical exam FAQ.
How long does the exam take and when are results sent?
Most appointments take about one and a half hours. Once all tests are complete, IMMEDEX submits your results electronically to IRCC, usually within 7 to 10 business days.
Can IMMEDEX tell me if I passed the medical exam?
Our clinic can explain your test results and answer medical questions, but only IRCC can decide whether your health meets the requirements for permanent residence. If they need more information, they will contact you directly.
What if I already had an immigration medical exam in the last five years?
In some situations, IRCC may let you reuse a recent immigration medical exam. If this applies to you, IRCC will give you instructions. You can bring your previous IME or UMI number to your appointment or contact IRCC to confirm whether a new exam is required.
