Do You Need a Medical Exam to Become a Canadian Citizen?

September 30, 2026
It is a common question among long-term residents preparing to apply for Canadian citizenship: do I need to complete another medical exam? The short answer is no — Canadian citizenship does not require an immigration medical exam.
No Medical Exam Is Required for Canadian Citizenship
Unlike permanent residence applications, the Canadian citizenship application process (under the Citizenship Act) does not include a mandatory medical exam requirement. By the time you are applying for citizenship, you have already met the medical admissibility requirements IRCC set during your permanent residence application — and those requirements do not need to be repeated.
When Was Your Medical Exam Required?
For most Canadian citizens-to-be, the medical exam was a required step earlier in their immigration journey:
- When applying for permanent residence (Express Entry, family sponsorship, or another PR stream).
- When applying for a temporary work or study permit that required an IME.
- As part of a refugee or asylum claim.
Once you became a permanent resident and your medical admissibility was confirmed, IRCC does not re-examine your health as part of the citizenship process.
Are There Any Medical Elements in the Citizenship Application?
The Canadian citizenship application includes no physical exam or lab tests. IRCC does conduct a background check, and applicants must meet residency and language requirements — but health is not a standard criterion for citizenship eligibility.
What If I Never Had an IME Before Becoming a Permanent Resident?
Some applicants may have become permanent residents through streams that did not require a medical exam. In these cases, citizenship application still does not require an IME. IRCC does not retroactively require medical exams for citizenship applicants.
Planning Your Immigration Journey
If you are still in the process of obtaining permanent residence and have not yet completed your immigration medical exam, that step will come before citizenship. Understanding where the IME fits in your overall timeline helps you plan accordingly.
