IRCC-Accredited Medical Exams for Refugees in Canada
Who is considered a refugee?
The Government of Canada defines a refugee as someone who is seeking protection and cannot safely return to their home country.
This protection, commonly referred to as asylum, may be granted to individuals who face any of the following risks:
A well-founded fear of persecution
The danger of being subjected to torture
A serious risk to their life
The threat of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment

Why Choose
IMMEDEX for Your Refugee Medical Screening?

At IMMEDEX, we understand the challenges refugee claimants face during the immigration process. A key requirement is the immigration medical exam, which ensures individuals do not pose a public health or safety risk. This exam is mandatory and must be completed at authorized clinics that provide Canadian immigration medicals.
As part of our ongoing commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care, we’re proud to have an all-female team of physicians. Their presence ensures a more sensitive and understanding experience, offering a lighter, more reassuring touch during every exam. Additionally, we participate in government-funded programs that fully cover the cost of these exams and any necessary follow-up testing.
If you have valid ID and refugee status, your exam at IMMEDEX is completely free. While the exam does not affect the outcome of your refugee claim, it is a crucial step before applying for a work or study permit, making it an essential part of your journey to a new life in Canada.

Patients with scheduled appointments are given priority over walk-ins, ensuring a more efficient process. For non-refugee patients, a fee is required for the examination, and payment is due at the time of service.

Preparation tip
Patients should wear loose-fitting clothing and short sleeves for the examination.

FAQ

What is An Immigration Medical Exam?
An Immigration Medical Exam is a mandatory health examination required by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for individuals applying for certain visas, permanent residency, or refugee status. The exam is conducted by an IRCC Accredited Panel Physician and includes a physical exam, blood tests (for HIV and syphilis), urine tests (for protein, glucose, and blood), and a chest X-ray (to check for tuberculosis).
What should I bring to my immigration medical exam?
When attending your Immigration Medical Exam, you must bring your passport or another government-issued photo identification, any medical records or reports related to significant health conditions, proof of prior vaccinations, and a list of any current medications. Additionally, bring the appointment letter or email confirmation if you received one from the IRCC.
How long does It take to get the results of an immigration medical exam?
The results of an Immigration Medical Exam typically take about 1 to 2 weeks to be processed. However, the timeline can vary depending on the IRCC Accredited Panel Physician’s office, the specific tests required, and whether additional medical information is needed. The results are submitted directly to the IRCC by the Panel Physician.
Can I fail an immigration medical exam?
While the term “fail” is not typically used, certain health conditions can make a person inadmissible to Canada. The Immigration Medical Exam assesses whether an applicant has a condition that could pose a public health risk, such as untreated tuberculosis, or a condition that could place excessive demand on Canada’s health and social services. The decision is made by the IRCC, not the Panel Physician.
How much does an immigration medical exam cost?
The cost of an Immigration Medical Exam varies by location and the IRCC Accredited Panel Physician conducting the exam. IMMEDEX exam prices range from $0 (refugee with valid ID) to $275 CAD. This cost usually covers the physical examination, chest X-ray, and required blood and urine tests. For the latest pricing details, click here to view our current rates.
