Medical Exam
What is An Immigration Medical Exam?
An Immigration Medical Exam is a mandatory health examination required by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for individuals applying for certain visas, permanent residency, or refugee status. The exam is conducted by an IRCC Accredited Panel Physician and includes a physical exam, blood tests (for HIV and syphilis), urine tests (for protein, glucose, and blood), and a chest X-ray (to check for tuberculosis).
What should I bring to my immigration medical exam?
When attending your Immigration Medical Exam, you must bring your passport or another government-issued photo identification, any medical records or reports related to significant health conditions, proof of prior vaccinations, and a list of any current medications. Additionally, bring the appointment letter or email confirmation if you received one from the IRCC.
Do I need to fast before my Immigration Medical Exam?
No, fasting is not necessary. You can eat prior to your arrival, as food won’t affect your exam or blood test. We recommend drinking plenty of water, as you will need to provide a urine sample. Additionally, menstruation will not affect the outcome of your exam.
What’s included in the Complete IRCC Medical Exam?
Our Complete IRCC Medical Exam includes the following:
- Physical Exam: A thorough check-up measuring vision, height, weight, and blood pressure.

- Chest X-Ray: An examination for signs of tuberculosis, as required by IRCC. (age dependant)
How will I know when my exam results have been submitted to the IRCC?

Services & Prices
How much does an Immigration Medical Exam cost?
The cost of an Immigration Medical Exam varies by location and the IRCC Accredited Panel Physician conducting the exam. On average, the fee ranges from $200 to $400 CAD. This cost usually covers the physical examination, chest X-ray, and required blood and urine tests. Refugees with valid ID are fully covered, and the exam cost is $0. It’s advisable to confirm the exact price with the Panel Physician’s office when booking your appointment.
Are there additional fees for follow-up appointments?
Yes, additional fees may apply for follow-up appointments, such as Recall ($40) or Furtherance ($90) services, if additional tests or consultations are required after your initial exam.
Are all services performed at the same location and on the same day?
Yes, all services are performed at the same location, within the same day. Your immigration medical exam will begin with a doctor’s examination, followed by blood and urine sample collection for analysis. After the exam, you’ll proceed to the imaging clinic in the same building for your chest X-ray. Then your results will be submitted electronically directly to the IRCC.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept cash, credit, and debit payments at the clinic. You also have the option to pre-pay securely online before your appointment. Please note that the chest X-ray requires a separate $50 fee, which must be paid directly at the imaging clinic in the same building. Payment for the X-ray can be made by cash or e-transfer.
Do you offer services in multiple languages?
Yes, IMMEDEX offers services in multiple languages. Our panel physicians are available to assist you in English, French, and Mandarin, ensuring clear communication throughout the medical exam process. For specific language availability, feel free to contact the clinic.

Process & Result
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring the following items to your Immigration Medical Exam:
- Government-issued identification (a passport is preferred, but an Ontario or other provincial driver’s license is also acceptable)
- Any documentation received from IRCC ex: biodata form
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses, if you use them
- Any medical reports or test results related to previous or existing medical conditions
- A list of your current medications
- If you are a refugee, please also bring your Interim Federal Health (IFH) documents: Acknowledgment letter of claim.
Bringing these items ensures a smooth and efficient process during your appointment.
How long does the Immigration Medical Exam take, and when will I get the results?
The Immigration Medical Exam takes approximately 1.5 hours, with all tests completed on the same day and at the same location. The results are typically processed within 1 to 2 weeks, but the timeline can vary depending on the Panel Physician’s office, the specific tests required, and whether additional medical information is needed. Your results will be submitted directly to the IRCC by the Panel Physician.
Can I fail an Immigration Medical Exam?
While the term “fail” is not typically used, certain health conditions can make a person inadmissible to Canada. The Immigration Medical Exam assesses whether an applicant has a condition that could pose a public health risk, such as untreated tuberculosis, or a condition that could place excessive demand on Canada’s health and social services. The decision is made by the IRCC, not the Panel Physician.
How are the results sent to IRCC? Will I receive a copy of my medical exam results?
The results of your medical exam are submitted directly to the IRCC through the eMedical system, therefore a copy is not necessary. However, if you would like a personal copy of your results, you please visit our Order My Report page to order your medical exam now (additional fee of $20).
What happens if additional tests are required after my medical exam?
If additional tests are required, you will receive a request from the IRCC. You will need to return to a Panel Physician for further testing, known as a Furtherance. Additional fees may apply for these follow-up appointments.
