Planning Canadian spouse sponsorship or sponsor common law partner Canada? All applicants are required to undergo an IRCC-approved immigration medical exam before their visa can be finalized. The immigration medical exam is a mandatory step for all applicants under Canada’s spousal sponsorship program and family class sponsorship, ensuring compliance with Canadian immigration health requirements.

IMMEDEX, a certified panel physician clinic, ensures couples complete this essential step efficiently and with peace of mind.

Why the Medical Exam Matters

Spouse Sponsorship

Mandatory for spouse sponsorship and spouse visa Canada applications.

Confirms your partner does not present a public health risk.

Results are uploaded through eMedical, speeding up spouse immigration to Canada processing.

Completing the exam early keeps your sponsor your spouse Canada file on track.

Your Obligations as a Spouse Sponsor

When you pursue Canadian spouse sponsorship or choose to sponsor your spouse Canada, both the sponsor and the sponsored person must understand their roles and responsibilities in the sponsorship process.

The sponsorship agreement and undertaking agreement are legal documents outlining the sponsor’s obligation to provide financial support and meet all financial obligations for the sponsored person.
You must sign an undertaking, a legally binding promise to provide for your partner’s basic needs for three years after they become a permanent resident (all provinces except Quebec).

Basic needs include:

Food, clothing, shelter, and other day‑to‑day living costs.

Dental care, eye care, and any health services not covered by public health insurance.

As part of the sponsorship agreement and undertaking agreement, sponsors must financially support their partner and cannot fail to meet these financial obligations.

Basic needs include:

By signing, you agree that your partner will not have to rely on government social assistance.

If they do receive benefits during the undertaking period, you are legally required to repay that amount and you cannot sponsor anyone else until the debt is cleared.

Important

The three‑year obligation cannot be cancelled even if your relationship ends, you or your spouse move to another province or country, or your own financial situation changes. During this period, the sponsor is required to provide financial support for the sponsored person.

The undertaking remains in force even after your spouse becomes a Canadian citizen.

Understanding these responsibilities before booking the immigration medical exam helps ensure your spouse visa Canada application moves forward smoothly, and avoids costly surprises later.
