Completing your immigration medical exam can feel like a major milestone — and it is. But many applicants are left wondering: what happens next? From the moment you leave the clinic to the point where your results reach IRCC and your application moves forward, here is a clear step-by-step breakdown.

Step 1: Your Panel Physician Submits Results to IRCC

You do not need to send your exam results to IRCC yourself. Once your physical examination is complete and all lab results are available, your IRCC-accredited panel physician submits the findings directly to IRCC through the eMedical system. At Immedex, results are typically submitted within 5 to 7 business days of your exam date.

Step 2: You Receive Confirmation and Your Exam Document

After submission, your clinic will notify you. Depending on your application type, you will receive:

• An IMM 1017B Upfront Medical Report form — required for Express Entry permanent residence applicants. Must be uploaded with your online application.
• A printed information sheet or case reference number confirming your exam was completed and submitted.

Keep this document — you will need your IME number or this form for your immigration application.

Step 3: IRCC Reviews Your Medical Results

Once submitted through eMedical, IRCC incorporates your medical results into the review of your overall application. No action is typically required from you at this stage. You can monitor your application status through your IRCC online account (MyCIC / IRCC portal).

What If IRCC Has Questions or Concerns?

If IRCC identifies a potential issue with your medical results, they will contact you via a procedural fairness letter. This explains the specific concern and gives you the opportunity to respond — usually within 60 days — with additional medical documentation. Receiving this letter is not a refusal.

What Is Medical Surveillance?

Some applicants with certain health findings — such as a history of tuberculosis — may be placed under medical surveillance. This means you must report to provincial or territorial public health authorities upon arrival in Canada. If this applies, IRCC will notify you in your visa or permit documentation.

Reminder: Your IME Results Are Valid for 12 Months

Your immigration medical exam results are valid for 12 months from the date of your exam. If your application is not finalized within that window, you may need to complete a new exam.
